Plated Hoisin Cod with SlawWell, 2015 is off to a great start! I recently tried the meal subscription service, Plated. Though not entirely new, the concept of having healthy pre-planned meal bundles sent directly to my door, really spoke to me this year. Being my first time trying something like this, I really had no idea what it would be like and what the quality and condition of the ingredients would be, but I love trying new things so I went for it. I mean, why not start 2015 off by making life a little easier (no need to think ahead about what to make for dinner, go to the store, sit in traffic, etc. You get it.), healthier (they use antibiotic and hormone free meat, sustainable seafood and local farm-to-table produce) and with extra money in my pocket (3 meals for 2 at about $12/plate is the equivalent of one meal out in this area.), right? I think it sounds like a great idea, myself.

So what is Plated exactly and how does it work?

  1. You pick how often you want to get a delivery and on what day of the week
  2. Each week you have the choice of your meal selections, which change each week
  3. The ingredients arrive packaged in bundles separated by meal (and on ice to keep it fresh)
  4. Instruction cards are provide with step-by-step directions for how to prepare the meal
  5. Voila!

My first week’s meal selection included:

  • Hoisin Cod with Slaw (pictured above)
  • Cauliflower Sweet Potato Curry
  • Steak Gyros

Overall, I enjoyed the three meals that came in my first Plated delivery. The ingredients were fresh, the recipes were easy to make and it saved me a trip (or two) to the store. My favorite dishes were the Steak Gyros and the Cauliflower Sweet Potato Curry. Although the slaw was pretty tasty, the cod lacked flavor in my opinion. Marinating the cod overnight would probably do the trick, but I think that goes against the quick and easy concept they are going for. However, if you do have the time, then I recommend taking the few extra minutes to prep it the day before.

In terms of portion size, they seemed small at first, but I have to say, I didn’t feel hungry afterwards. The portions are sized well for healthy diet, which is what they are going for. If you feel hungry afterwards, just give your body some time to adjust and then it will become the new norm.
